Essential Driver Training (EDT) became mandatory in 2011 for those who received their learner permits and wished to apply for their full car (B) licence

The 12 lessons in the EDT program are designed:

to cover the most important skills and behaviours that a learner driver should have
guide the learner drivers’ progress
help learner drivers prepare for their practical driving test

At D’s School of Motoring we ensure all our students are fully prepared and confident before they sit their driving tests. To do so we follow the recommended lesson guide set out by the RSA. This guide is included in the EDT learner driver information booklet which we recommend our students to study when participating in the EDT program. This booklet can be found here.

At D’s School of Motoring we perform driving assessments in live traffic situations to determine the driver’s ability to drive safely. These assessments may be required for multiple reasons including medical conditions, functional impairment or age-related changes.

The assessment may be requested by a health professional to establish medical fitness to drive. The medical fitness to rive guidelines can be found here.

‘Fitness to drive’ certifications are also required for drivers who are 70 years of age or older, and are applying for a driver’s licence. To award this certification the GP may request a driving assessment.

At D’s school of motoring we perform two assessments. Depending on the reason for the assessment a person may require either or both;

An in-car off road driving assessment is performed to examine a person’s physical range of mobility and strengths. This assessment will determine if any adaptions are required to enable the person to drive.
An on-road driving assessment assesses ones ability to drive a vehicle in live traffic situations. In doing so it examines one’s physical, cognitive and perceptual ability while driving.

A category B driving licence authorises you to drive a car, van or 4 x 4 which has a maximum mass (as specified by the manufacturer) of not more than 3,500kg and is designed and constructed to carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. You may tow a trailer with a maximum mass (again as specified by the manufacturer) not greater than 750kg, or where the maximum mass is more than 750kg, the combined maximum mass of the towing vehicle and the trailer is not greater than 3,500kg.

In the event that the combined mass of the towing vehicle and the trailer is greater than 3,500kg a category BE driving licence is required.

At D’s School of Motoring the duration of each lesson is two hours. In the first lesson the students’ competencies will be reviewed and from this, the areas which need to be improved will be determined. This initial session will allow us to create a personalised plan for each student. This plan will cover each of the relevant areas a student will be tested on, with an emphasis on the abilities needed to be a safe road user when towing. To allow every student to become comfortable with the test route, the final lessons of the plan will take place along these routes.

D’s School of Motoring provides a modern and compliant 4×4 vehicle and trailer for each lesson, which can also be hired for the test. At D’s School of Motoring we give recommendations on when a student is ready for the test. We can also book a test for a student on their behalf.

D’s School of Motoring offers advanced driving courses through both an IAM and ROSPA accredited driving instructor. Advanced driving courses are available to individuals, companies with large fleets and anything in-between. Each course can be customised to meet specific needs.

Each course begins with an assessment in which we will identify the main driving areas requiring improvement and discuss with the driver how we will aim to achieve the improvements. During the assessment we will also introduce the driver to advanced and defensive driving techniques.

Each driver that enrols in the advanced driving course will receive 6 hours of advanced driving tuition. During this time we will ensure best practice advanced and defensive driving techniques are explained, demonstrated and practiced under the supervision of a qualified driving instructor.

D’s School of Motoring will also schedule and book the Advanced Driving test, upon request. As our instructor is both IAM and ROSPA accredited you can choose which organisation you would like to sit your test with.
